THE QUAY PUNT

The Quay Punt is renowned for its sea worthiness. These vessels had originally been developed to service the windjammers that used to visit the port of Falmouth in the 19th and 20th centuries but as merchant sail declined so too the quay punts faded. However, today their role is filled by four motor launches.

Gaffers and Luggers launched the first of a new family of glassfibre quay punts. Martin recovered the drawings of the traditional hull form. Quay punts and the yacht derivatives seem to have varied in length between 26' and 36' with draughts of 6' and over. The Gaffers and Luggers boat is at the top end of the range measuring 35' by 11' and drawing 6'4". Her gently rockered keel, encapsulating 6 tons of ballast, slopes down to a point of maximum draught below the aft quarters

Midships section above the keel are firm. The stem is vertical with a well-rounded forefoot below the waterline. The sternpost is slightly raked, and the transom full. A lifting bowsprit is fitted to this version. There is an offset mizzen mast. There is a large mainsail, which can be reduced as in traditional boats by three sets of reef points, measures 480 sq ft. The working jib is 165 sq ft, the staysail is 169 sq ft and the mizzen 70 sq ft giving a total working sail area of 884 sq ft. Sails for the first boat were cream Dacron, running rigging is of stainless steel.
Construction of the hull is from 15 layers of 600 x 300 Combimat thickened around the keel. The deck house sides are teak faced marine ply while the interior woodwork is of iroko, and both masts are of Columbian pine. A 43 hp Beta diesel is gravity fed from a 60 gallon fuel tank and drives a 19" three bladed propeller.

There is spacious accommodation with galley, spacious saloon with ample berths either side and at the centre a drop leaf table. Headroom is 6'6". Through a door in the forward bulkhead is a forepeak larger than the cabin of many cruising yachts. To starboard is a seconds head, to port a wash basin, and beyond side seats which can be converted into a double berth.
