THE CLOVELLY PICAROONER

This attractive but robust dayboat was originally designed as a beach boat with a lug rig to work out of Clovelly Harbour. Its shallow draught and rounded bilge enabled the fishermen to get the best price for their catches as they were able to unload quickly and effectively whilst larger craft had to wait for the tide. The Picarooner means 'Sea Robber'.

As interest in traditionally rigged craft continues to increase the Picarooner has been successfully adapted to a gaff sloop.

It is an ideal family dayboat. The rounded bilges makes for still sailing while the high topsides and buoyancy tanks give a sense of security for both children and parents. The buoyancy tanks are fitted with watertight hatches, ideal storage lockers as well as providing additional seating. It is easily trailed, the mast and spars fit neatly inside the boat, saving money and mooring fees.

Bouyancy tanks are fitted fore and aft, the latter housing an outboard suitable for a longshaft outboard up to 8 hp.

In the centre thwart is the centreplate case. The galvanised centreplate swings up and down freely when sailing in shallow water. The railings, beltings and thwarts are hardwood. Mast and spars are solid Columbian Pine. The mast is secured by stainless steel standing rigging. The running rigging is 8 mm poly hemp. All the iron fittings are made at the yard and galvanised. A set of standard sails, mainsail (with one set of reef points) and a jib are made of white terylene. (Tan is available at 15% extra)

The Picarooner comes ready to sail away and is supplied with a small anchor, warp, fenders, rollocks and a set of paddles.

Optional Extras

These include two types of cover:

The mast cover is for use on a mooring or outhaul. It fits neatly over the boom and around the mast covering the whole boat by being secured under the sails.

The mast down cover is for use on a trailer. The mast doubles as a strong back with the spars and sails fitting neatly inside.

Trailers with winches are available. A breakback trailer can be supplied is preferred.

All prices for optional extras are available upon application.

The Launch Style

This variation can seat up to 6 - 8 people in comfort. With fore and aft buoyancy tanks it is driven by a longshaft outboard up to 8hp or a small inboard engine.

This tidy launch is ideal for exploring creeks and estuaries and taking the family beaching. A safe and stable platform for those who prefer to fish and robust enough to do a bit of potting and netting.

The standard launch style Picarooner comes supplied with oars, rollocks, small anchor and warp.
